A Brief History Of North Walsham – Wool, Cloth And Weaving
Article by Simon Haughtone
North Walsham is a market town found in Norfolk. This town originally was an Anglo Saxon settlement as became prosperous during the 12th century when weavers from Flanders arrived. “Walsham” cloth is from this area. Walsham cloth is a lightweight cloth usually worn in the summer. Worsted cloth, which was also made in North Walsham, is a heavier cloth for the winter.
Looking back in history Walsham was featured in many battles between the Vikings and Danes. Under Norse rule the town was given to the Abbey of Saint Benet. This monastery became very rich due to the absorption of the town. Weaving also funded the church and many “wool” churches were constructed due to the areas prosperity. The Abbey Church of Saint Benet and the Parish church were enlarged and renovated.
North Walsham was the site of the famous Peasant Revolt in 1381. These peasants managed to defeat thousands of citizens and take control of the city of Norwich. These rebels were eventually forced back out of the city and camped near North Walsham. It is at this spot that the rebels were killed.
Flemish weavers were invited by the king to the county and during the 13th and 14th century North Walsham was at the hear of the weaving and cloth industry. The main industrial spots were at Walsham and Worstead. These two towns have special clothes named after them.
In the 18th century the main church in North Walsham had a tower built making it the tallest building in the area. During a very windy day, when the bells were rung for a festival, the vibration was so great that the tower eventually collapsed the next morning. The west and south sides of the tower were completed ruins. Eventually during a fierce storm the rest of the tower came down with such force that the tremors were felt throughout the town.

Wool Clothing… There’s Simply Nothing Like It
Article by davio davedds
Usually, the very first thing you do when you bounce out of bed every day is think about what you are planning to wear, unless of course if it’s ‘slack day’ at your house & you’re gonna relax in your pyjamas. There’s quite a lot to think about like the the weather, your adventures, where you’re going, etc, etc.
In the event that it’s a cold & breezy winter’s day, a simple check out your window has got you questioning the decision you’ve made to emerge from bed but, seeing that you actually just have one obvious choice which is to dress up so you’re warm & dry all day. Wool clothing is the best choice for days such as this.
Being accommodating, wool clothing is also a great option for corporate wear or if you wish to appear more like a company individual. There’s lots of wool clothing available to suit this scenario, you can purchase trousers, suits & sweatshirts, etc which are ideal for work wear or casual, after hours situations. Simply being so pleasant to dress in, wool is also a wonderful choice for more leisurely wear too.
Wool is extremely flexible, due partly to the fact that there is a significant selection of choices, styles & quality of wool obtainable. This brings about a huge variation in roughness, coziness and value. As an example, you’re able to buy a pair of pure wool pants for much less than you’d probably spend on a cashmere sweater. Both are made from wool, but it’s the kind of wool and its particular roughness or soft qualities which makes all the difference.
The rougher type of wool can be used for over clothing such as coats and overcoats. This kind of wool costs less due to its roughness & rough wool is not really suitable to be worn close to the skin simply because it may be annoying & could cause you to itch.
Mainly, wool clothing is produced from a better type of wool, however that doesn’t mean that there’s no variation in wool’s fineness. Many wool products will always be fairly scratchy, and pretty frequently pure wool is not chosen to be used, usually a mixture of wool and additional fabrics are. Nevertheless, the better merino wool and cashmeres are really fluffy and tend to be acknowledged as very comfy to dress in. Consequently the bigger price tag.
Cashmere as well as other gentle wool is considered by all as a product of high class however, every type of wool is appreciated for its warmth, breathability and level of comfort. This kind of clothing fabric has been utilized for years and years and these days, it’s continues to be an important & well-known fabric within the clothes marketplace. However recently, man-made materials have gained popularity and sales of wool clothing has diminished some. Nevertheless the blending together of finer, more supple wool continues to make this functional material a preferred selection in today’s marketplace.

Making Woolies or wool soakers from recyled sweaters is Easy
Choosing and Prepping Sweaters
Head to your local thrift store, or even your closet, to acquire several wool sweaters for making your own wool diaper covers. Choose sweaters that are 100% wool (or very nearly so), free of small holes, and soft (not itchy) to the touch. One wool sweater will generally make one pair of wool longies or shorties, plus one to two pull-up style diaper covers.
Next, wash the sweaters in the washing machine in hot water to felt the wool. You want the wool to be thick and shrunken so it will contain moisture. Use a small amount of a gentle, unscented detergent. Dry the sweaters on high in your dryer. You may want to repeat this process until the wool is properly felted.
Once you have a shrunken, felted, soft-feeling sweater, you are ready to do some basic sewing to turn your sweaters into diaper covers. Wool makes a great diaper cover because it is inherently anti-bacterial, breathable, and highly water resistant. The natural lanolin found in wool fibers acts as a water repellent. Periodically, you will need to re-lanolize your wool covers to keep them effective at retaining moisture.
How to Make a Recycled Wool Diaper Cover
Once you see this amazing, ingenious pattern you won’t believe how easy it is to make a wool diaper cover. Often called a “baby bum sweater,” the pattern calls for you to cut out a large triangle from an old wool sweater. The points of the triangle come together to form the cover. The waistband is self-forming from the ribbed bottom of the sweater. Add some ribbing around the leg openings and you’re done! Depending on the size of cover you make, you can sew one or two covers from one sweater.
How to Make Recycled Wool Longies or Shorties
Wool longies are woolen pants that act as a diaper cover and pants all in one. When used over a secured prefold or fitted cloth diaper, wool longies can be a great solution to keeping children dry during naps or overnight.
Wool longies are very easy to make from an old sweater. Basically, the arms of the sweater become the legs of the longies. First, you cut off the arms of the sweater at the armpit. Cut down each seam of the arms to where you want the crotch of the pants to be. Sew the two pieces together to form pants. You can make a waistband for the pants by adding some elastic to the waist, or by using the ribbed bottom found on most sweaters. For a step-by-step tutorial on how to make longies.
For shorties, which can come in handy in warm climates or during the summer, the process is identical to longies. Just cut off and hem the legs to your desired length. You can also use the ribbed hem, wristbands, or neckline of the sweater to make leg cuffs.

Modern day cloth diapering choices. Where do I start?
With going green and eco-friendly habits becoming all the rage and the economy causing everyone to pinch pennies everywhere they can modern day cloth diapers are really gaining popularity. But where do you start?
Modern day cloth diapers are no longer the white cloths and stick pins like grandma used to use. Cloth diapers these days are Hip, cool, modern and oh so squishy soft.
But where do you start? First off you need to decide what kind of cloth diapers you would like to use. Here I break them down into your different options.
Cloth Diaper Types
Flat: A single layered fabric (typically cotton) that can be folded where absorbancy is needed most, or simply folded into a square and used like a prefold. Cotton weaves include birdseye, muslin. Economical and one sized (can be doubled when baby is older). Receiving blankets can be used (but need to be pinned). You need a cover to make this type of diaper waterproof.
Prefold: A flat, layered, rectangular diaper with extra layers for absorbancy in the center. Commonly used with a fastener and waterproof cover. Economical to buy and can be repurposed as burp/cleaning cloths or inserts/doublers. Great for the newborn stage. You need a cover to make this type of diaper waterproof.
Pre-Fitted: A fitted diaper made from a prefold. Goes on like a disposable. May have snaps or aplix (a.k.a. velcro, hook and loop, touchtape) closure, or require pins or a Snappi. You need a cover to make this type of diaper waterproof.
Fitted: A shaped diaper that includes elasticized legs. Most commonly has an aplix or snap closure. You need a cover to make this type of diaper waterproof.
Contour: Shaped, like a fitted diaper, but without elastic and usually without attached closures. Commonly used with pins or a Snappi. You need a cover to make this type of diaper waterproof.
Pocket: A 2 layered diaper that requires the addition of an absorbant insert. The outer layer is most commonly made of PUL, with the inner (the part that sits against baby’s skin) being a “stay-dry” fabric (microfleece, suedecloth, etc.) that allows moisture to seep through to the insert, keeping baby’s skin dry. Use a fresh, clean insert and pocket at each change. You do NOT need a cover to make this type of diaper waterproof.
All In One (AIO): The closest option to disposable diapers. Outside is made of a waterproof layer, and the absorbancy is sewn in. You do NOT need a cover to make this type of diaper waterproof.
All In Two (AI2): Similar to an AIO, but with a removable absorband layer for easier washing and faster drying. Absorbant layer is usually snapped in place inside the diaper, sitting directly against baby’s skin. You do NOT need a cover to make this type of diaper waterproof.
Covers
Polyurethane Laminate (PUL): The waterproof fabric commonly used for making diapers and diaper covers. can be air dried and reused in a day’s rotation unless soiled with poo. 3-6 are usually adequate for a full diapering stash.
Nylon:Not as commonly used as PUL, but a popular economical alternative. Ususally found in a pull-on style cover
Wool (Soakers, Shorties, Longies, Skirties): Wool yarn can be used to knit or crochet diaper covers that, once treated with lanolin, are quite waterproof. Wool covers also offer breathability that PUL covers do not, as well as certain antimicrobial properties.
Interlock (Soakers, Shorties, Longies, Skirties): Wool or acrylic yarn that has been tightly woven into more of a fabric than knitting or crocheting produces.
Acrylic (Soakers, Shorties, Longies, Skirties): Like wool, but made with acrylic yarn. Can be washed more often and washed/dried with your normal laundry.
Fleece (Soakers, Shorties, Longies, Skirties): A synthetic alternative to wool, fleece can be treated with fabric softener for water resistance and used as a diaper cover.
Soaker: A term for a diaper cover made of wool, acrylic, or fleece, most commonly in the form of a pull-on (rather than wrap w/ aplix or snap closure). See also: Soaker definition in Accessories.
Accessories
Pins: Special safety pins used to fasten certain types of diapers.
Snappi: An alternative to pins. 2-3 is usually adequate for a full diapering stash.
Aplix, Touchtape: Velcro
Liners: Piece of fabric or paper that is laid into a diaper to protect the diaper from creams, make removal of poo easier, or provide a “stay-dry” feeling on baby’s skin. Most of the paper liners on the market are flushable. Fleece liners are easily and cheaply made by cutting synthetic fabric store microfleece into rectangles.
Inserts: Seperate absorbant layers for use inside pocket diapers.
Doublers: Extra (usually smaller) inserts for use in combination with primary inserts.
Soaker: Another term for the absorbant layer of any diaper. See also: Soaker definition in Covers.
Pails and Storage
Wet Pail: A dirty diaper storage pail that employs water and/or additives in which dirty diapers soak until wash day.
Dry Pail: A dirty diaper storage pail that does not use liquids to soak diapers. Dirty diapers are sprayed or wiped of solids, and then simply tossed in the dry pail until wash day.
Combating Pail Stink: Though some moms use commercially marketed diaper pails with success, the most common solutions seem to be simple lidded plastic trash cans, buckets, or tall laundry hampers. Most seem to agree that the more air that can circulate around the diapers, the less stink they have (and their home still smells normal as well!) Cleaning the inside of the pail on wash day goes a long way toward getting rid of any smell, as does a few drops of essential oil (like Tea Tree Oil) on a small piece of cloth tossed into the pail (some pail liners even come with a piece sewn in for this purpose.
